Ex-Chief Justice of Ghana, Justice Sophia Akuffo, has encouraged sacked Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, to look to God for strength following her removal from office by President John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking to Accra-based TV3 on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, a day after President Mahama sacked Madam Torkornoo, Justice Akuffo encouraged to stay strong and keep trusting.
She described Madam Torkornoo’s dismissal a difficult and unfair ordeal.
According to Justice Akuffo,
“She should take heart. That God sees, and sometimes when you go through certain things which you think have brought you to the end or to your knees or something like that, that could be far from the truth.”
She said “There could be bigger, better and greater needs that the Lord has in store. That is what I will tell her, and that is what I will send to her as a text message”, remind Justice Torkornoo that setbacks can often be redirections to greater purpose.
She says “When you are a believer, things happen today, yes, they have happened, so look to God and move on, and you will allow God to manage the rest.”
Her message comes amid national debate and political tension following the removal of Chief Justice Torkornoo, which many including Justice Akuffo have described as troubling for the independence of the judiciary.
