Ghana: Six Killed, Including Infant, in Midnight Fire at Abuakwa Manhyia

A tragic fire outbreak has claimed the lives of six people, including a three-month-old baby, after a residential apartment was engulfed in flames at Abuakwa Manhyia in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality.

The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Monday, December 22, 2025, while occupants of the apartment were asleep. The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and investigations are ongoing.

Power Restoration Preceded Incident

The Assembly Member for Abuakwa Manhyia, Evans Opoku, said the incident was brought to his attention shortly after electricity supply was restored to parts of the Ashanti Region following a temporary power outage on Sunday night. Although authorities have not linked the fire to the power restoration, the timing has become part of preliminary inquiries.

Emergency Response

Upon receiving the distress call, personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service stations at Nkawie and Twedie were deployed to the scene. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading to nearby structures.

However, all six victims were reportedly trapped inside the apartment before rescue teams could reach them.

Police Investigation Underway

The Ghana Police Service has since identified the charred bodies and is making arrangements to convey them to the morgue for preservation and autopsy. Investigators are working closely with fire officials to establish the cause of the fire and determine whether any safety lapses contributed to the fatalities.

Call for Fire Safety Awareness

Local authorities have renewed calls for residents to observe basic fire safety measures, especially during the night, including safe use of electrical appliances and having accessible escape routes.

The Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipal Assembly is also expected to support affected families as investigations continue into one of the deadliest domestic fire incidents recorded in the area in recent times.
