Ghana Sets Up Education Fund For Children Of Helicopter Crash Victims

Ghanaian President, John Dramani Mahama, has announced that a special education fund will be set up by his government to support children of the two ministers and six other prominent Ghanaians who died in an helicopter crash recently.

President Mahama made the announcement in a speech on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, during the third day funeral rites (Adua) of Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, the Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator who was one of the eight persons who died in the crash.

According to Mr. Mahama, the education fund will be unveiled officially during the state funeral for the eight victims of the crash at the Black Star Square in Accra on Friday, August 15.

He says “There will be a state funeral on Friday, 15th August. At the funeral, we will announce some programmes for creating a fund that will assist with the education of the children. Friday, I will announce the details of that, so that people who want to contribute to the future of the children they have left behind will have the opportunity to do so.”

The President added that “I believe that Allah will have mercy on him, forgive him for all his sins, and accept him.”

The helicopter crash which happened in the Adansi Akrofuom District claimed the lives of eight people, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed; former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; and NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong.

Also killed in the crash were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

On Sunday, August 10, Dr. Murtala Muhammed and Muniru Mohammed, were buried at the Military Cemetery in accordance with Islamic tradition.
