Ghana’s National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has intercepted a record-breaking 3.3 tonnes of cocaine, valued at over $350 million, en route to Accra from the Western Region.

Acting on intelligence, NIB officers stopped a tipper truck at Pedu Junction in Cape Coast on March 4, 2025, and discovered 143 sacks of cocaine hidden beneath sand. The truck, occupied by two suspects, was traveling from Takoradi to Weija.

Field tests by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) confirmed the substance as raw cocaine, with the initial seizure weighing 2,974 kilograms. Further investigations led to the discovery of an additional 13 sacks and a bag of suspected cocaine, totaling 345.07 kilograms.

Laboratory tests conducted by NACOC and the Ghana Standards Authority confirmed the consignment’s total weight of 3,319.68 kilograms, with purity levels between 50% and 70%. The cocaine is believed to have entered Ghana by sea through fishing vessels.

Two suspects, Isaac Quaicoe and Kenneth Cobbinah, have been remanded in custody and are scheduled to reappear in court on April 2, 2025. The NIB has identified additional suspects who remain at large and is actively pursuing their arrest to ensure all involved are brought to justice.
