Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that the government has made substantial progress in addressing the issue of unpaid salaries and allowances for health workers across the country.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Monday, October 13, Mr. Akandoh revealed that the Ministry of Health has obtained financial clearance for the payment of 17,909 nurses, midwives, and allied health interns who began their national service in early 2024.
He further disclosed that an additional financial clearance has been approved by the Ministry of Finance for 13,500 nurses and midwives who were recruited and posted in late 2024. The clearance, which was initially set to expire on December 31, 2024, has been renewed to ensure full payment of their salaries and allowances.
“Financial clearance has been secured for the payment of the 17,909 nurses, midwives, and allied health interns who started their national service in early 2024, as well as for the 13,500 recruited and posted late last year,” he stated.
Mr. Akandoh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to settling all outstanding salary arrears and strengthening administrative systems to prevent similar delays in the future.
“The Ministry is implementing measures as part of a broader agenda to strengthen Ghana’s health system and safeguard the welfare of its workforce,” he added.
He urged all affected health workers to remain patient and continue serving diligently, assuring them that any lingering issues would be addressed promptly through the appropriate channels.
