Ghana: Road Deaths Surge by 20% in 2025 Despite Drop in Crashes and Injuries – NRSA Report

Provisional data from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) reveals a worrying rise in road traffic fatalities across Ghana, even as the total number of crashes and injuries slightly declined in September 2025.

According to the NRSA, 1,108 crashes were recorded in September 2025—a 5.1% decrease compared to the same month last year. These incidents involved 1,928 vehicles and resulted in 243 deaths and 1,405 injuries. While injuries fell by 3.8% and pedestrian knockdowns dropped by 7.1%, fatalities surged by 19.7%, rising from 203 in September 2024 to 243 this year.

Between January and September 2025, Ghana recorded 10,734 crashes—representing a 9.3% increase compared to the same period in 2024. These crashes involved 18,276 vehicles, caused 2,180 deaths, and left 12,362 people injured. This marks a 20% rise in fatalities and an 8.4% increase in injuries year-on-year.

Crash severity data for September 2025 indicates that:
• 46% of crashes were minor,
• 36% were serious, and
• 18% were fatal.

A demographic breakdown of fatalities shows that 89% of those who died in September were adults aged 18 and above, while 86% were male—a trend consistent throughout the year, with men accounting for 80% of total deaths.

Private vehicles accounted for the largest share of crashes in September (38.7%), followed by commercial vehicles (34%) and motorcycles (27.3%). Notably, motorcycle involvement rose by 6.7% year-on-year and by 20.1% over the January–September period.

Regionally, the data shows mixed outcomes:
• The Upper West Region recorded the highest spike in crash-related deaths in September—up by 700%.
• The Ahafo Region saw the steepest decline in injuries, down 91.6%.
• From January to September, the North East Region reported a 271% increase in injuries and a 69.2% rise in crashes.

The top three regions with the highest number of crashes in 2025 so far are:
1. Greater Accra – 3,304 crashes
2. Ashanti – 3,215 crashes
3. Eastern – 1,546 crashes

In terms of deaths, the Ashanti Region leads with 510 fatalities, followed by the Eastern Region with 449 and Greater Accra with 304.

Despite the overall reduction in crashes, the sharp rise in fatalities underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations, enhanced public education, and targeted interventions for high-risk groups—particularly male adults and motorcyclists.
