President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that Ghana and the United States of America (USA) agreed on the Trump’s administration third state deportation program, with Ghana receiving 14 West African citizens deported from the US so far.
He made this known in his first media encounter held at the Jubilee House in Accra on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.
He says the 14 deportees formed part of the first batch.
According to him, majority of the deportees were Nigerians.
He said one of the 14 deportees was a Gambian citizen, indicating that his administration liaised with the Gambian Embassy in Accra to facilitate the travel of the said deportee from Ghana to The Gambia.
The rest, he said, mainly traveled by bus to their respective countries.
He said “We were approached by the US to accept third-party nationals who were being removed from the US, and then we agreed with them that West African nationals were acceptable, because all our fellow West Africans don’t need a visa to come to our country.”
He added “So if they decided to travel from the US to Accra, they don’t need a visa anyway. So if you are bringing our colleague West Africans back, that’s okay.”
President Mahama clarified that “West Africa has the protocol of free movement, and so any West African is free to come to Ghana and be able to stay for 90 days. And so if they are bringing our colleagues back, we don’t have a problem accepting them.”
