GHANA: President Mahama Unveils ‘Nkokɔ Nkitinkiti’ Project to Boost Local Poultry Production

President John Dramani Mahama has announced an ambitious new initiative, the ‘Nkokɔ Nkitinkiti’ project, aimed at making Ghana self-sufficient in chicken production within three years. The national plan seeks to drastically reduce poultry imports by promoting local chicken farming.

Speaking during a visit to the National Service Authority Papao Farms in Accra, the President stated that the goal is to ensure that nearly all chicken consumed in the country is produced domestically. “Once the Nkokɔ Nkitinkiti project takes off, we believe that in three years, we’ll be producing almost 100% of the chicken that we eat in Ghana ourselves,” he said. “So that we can stop bringing nkokɔfunu from outside.”

President Mahama also voiced concerns about the health risks associated with imported poultry, noting that practices in other countries, such as the use of genetically modified chickens and injected hormones, may not align with Ghana’s health and safety standards. He emphasized that the project is not just about reducing dependency on imports, but also about promoting healthier, locally-sourced food options for Ghanaians.

The ‘Nkokɔ Nkitinkiti’ project is designed to include a comprehensive nationwide supply chain. This system will provide day-old chicks and feed to both small and large-scale farmers, establish processing plants, and handle the distribution of finished products under a new local brand. The initiative aligns with President Mahama’s broader vision for agricultural development, national food security, and youth employment.
