A suspected armed robber has been shot dead during a police intelligence-led operation at Danso, near Bawjiase, in the Awutu Senya District of the Central Region, following investigations into a string of violent robbery cases in Accra and parts of the Central Region.
The deceased suspect has been identified as Clement Kofi Aidoo, who was also known by several aliases, including Yaw, Paddy, and Joseph Abequaye. Police said he was killed in the early hours of Thursday, February 6, 2026, after allegedly resisting arrest during the operation.
According to police sources, the operation was carried out by officers acting on the instructions of the Inspector-General of Police, following a formal petition submitted on January 30, 2026, to the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit (AARU) of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
The petition was linked to a violent robbery attack reported by a 77-year-old woman, Madam Christiana Frimpong, who was assaulted in her residence at Labone, Accra, on December 4, 2025. The victim told police that armed men broke into her home, restrained her, and made away with valuable items, including her Toyota Hilux pickup truck with registration number GW 9834-25, an iPhone 16 Pro Max, and other personal belongings.
Following weeks of intelligence gathering and tracking, police operatives traced the suspect to Danso near Bawjiase, where he was believed to be hiding. Officers moved in to effect an arrest in the early hours of February 6.
A police source familiar with the operation said the suspect attempted to evade arrest when he spotted the officers.
“Upon seeing the officers, the suspect jumped through a window while holding a sharp cutlass and attempted to attack the police team. In response, officers fired shots, critically injuring him,” the source said.
The suspect was immediately rushed to the Police Hospital in Accra for medical attention but was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending medical officer.
During a search conducted as part of the operation, police recovered several items believed to be linked to earlier robbery incidents. These included the stolen Toyota Hilux belonging to Madam Frimpong, various documents, and the complainant’s mobile phone.
Also retrieved were identification cards, including a Voter ID card and a Police ID card belonging to G/Sgt Daniel Kusi Appiah, an officer attached to the Kaneshie Divisional Police Headquarters.
Further investigations revealed that the deceased suspect had previously been employed as a domestic worker through the KKN Domestic and Recruitment Agency. Police said this employment history placed him in proximity to some of the reported victims.
G/Sgt Appiah told investigators that Clement Kofi Aidoo had been working at his residence since November 1, 2025. He alleged that on November 14, 2025, while assisting him during a visit to Ridge Hospital, the suspect stole his Toyota Camry saloon car with registration number GC 123-12, his police and voter identification cards, GH¢12,200 in cash, and other personal effects.
Police said intelligence later revealed that the suspect was a native of Bontroase in the Central Region. On January 25, 2026, he was reportedly spotted driving the stolen Toyota Camry in Bontroase. A pursuit by security personnel was initiated, but the suspect abandoned the vehicle at Kojoacquah Village and escaped at the time.
Law enforcement authorities believe the suspect may have been involved in multiple robbery incidents across different regions, using stolen vehicles and false identities to evade detection.
The Ghana Police Service has indicated that investigations are still ongoing to determine whether the deceased acted alone or was part of a wider criminal network. Efforts are also being made to identify and arrest any accomplices who may have been involved in the Labone robbery or other related crimes.
Police have reiterated their commitment to tackling violent crime and urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to assist ongoing investigations.
