Ghana has opened 12 new courts for small claims and debt recovery cases.

Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Gertrude Torkonoo, announced the opening the courts.

According to her, eight of the new courts are based in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana.

The remaining four of the courts are located in the Ashanti Region.

She indicated that the creation of the courts became necessary due to an increase in small claims cases filed at the district Court in Ghana.

She attributed the increase to cases filed by a single company named Bills MicroCredit.

The Chief Justice speaking at the opening of the courts, said “the data further revealed that over 70% of the total cases filed by Bills MicroCredit were for claims less than Ghc 5,000.”
