Ghana: Mahama’s Gov’t Committed to Free Expression – Kwakye Ofosu Assures Media

Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has assured Ghanaians, especially media practitioners, that a future Mahama administration will not restrict freedom of expression, including online speech.

Speaking at the launch of the 29th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards in Accra on Thursday, October 9, Kwakye Ofosu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding media freedom while urging responsible use of digital platforms.

“Let me assure you that the government does not intend to curb freedoms. President Mahama, as you know him, is a strong advocate of free expression. He is exceptionally tolerant and open to criticism,” he said.

He, however, cautioned that the growing influence of social media comes with a collective duty to safeguard national unity.

“As President and head of government, he also has a responsibility to ensure that our social fabric is not torn apart by the misuse of social media,” Kwakye Ofosu added.

The event also featured the inauguration of a nine-member committee to vet entries for this year’s GJA Awards, chaired by Mr. Gabriel Bosompem, a former Commissioner of the National Media Commission and former Production Manager at TV3.

GJA President Albert Dwumfuor commended Ghanaian journalists for their enduring contribution to national development and democracy.

“As we launch the 29th GJA Awards today, let’s remember that Ghana’s story cannot be told without the voices of her journalists. Our nation’s future depends on the strength, integrity, and patriotism of our media,” he said.
