Ghana: Kwaw Kese Declares Himself the ‘King of Kings’ and Sole Keeper of True Hip-Life

Ghanaian rapper and hip-life icon Kwaw Kese has reaffirmed his dominance in Ghana’s music industry, boldly declaring that he remains the only artiste still doing pure hip-life and the undisputed “King of the Streets.”

In an interview on Hitz FM on Thursday, October 9, the “Abodam” hitmaker expressed pride in his lasting influence, stating that he and his peers helped shape the Ghanaian music scene into what it is today.

“We helped shape this industry. I am the only hip-life musician alive right now doing great and still doing it,” he asserted.

Kwaw Kese lamented that most of his contemporaries have drifted from hip-life to chase the growing Afrobeats trend. “These hip-life musicians don’t do it anymore. Most of them have turned to Afrobeats — but I still do my thing, hip-life, hundred percent,” he said.

The veteran rapper also emphasized his unshaken reign over street culture, claiming that no artiste has dethroned him despite the rise of new talents.

“Once a king, always a king. My throne is mine. There are others who are kings, but in their small thrones,” he stated confidently.

He dismissed attempts by younger artistes to imitate his style, calling them “photocopies” of his originality. “If you talk about madness, if you talk about streets, it’s Kwaw. Now we have photocopies claiming streets, but I’ve done all that,” he remarked.

However, Kwaw Kese acknowledged the impact of newer acts like Shatta Wale, comparing their respective reigns to different eras in football. “I respect what Shatta is commanding. It’s like football — there was Abedi Pele’s time, Stephen Appiah’s time, and now Kudus. Everyone has their era,” he explained.

Still, he maintained his ultimate position: “They are kings, but there’s a king of kings — and I’m the king of kings. All these kings look up to me.”

His bold declarations have reignited conversations about the evolution of hip-life and sparked heated debates among fans on social media about his claim to the “street king” title.
