Ghana: IGP Says Police Are Ready For Akwatia By-Election

Christian Tetteh Yohuno

Ghana’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, says the Ghana Police Service (GPS) is fully prepared to ensure a safe and violent-free by-election in Akwatia.

Mr. Yohunu made this known after the Police Management Board (POMAB) visited the Ghana Police Service’s High-Risk Operation Training Centre at Akyerematen in the Eastern Region on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.

The visit was to enable POMAB assess the readiness of Police officers ahead of the parliamentary by-election. GPS says the visit was part of broader measures to ensure maximum security and maintain law and order before, during, and after the by-election.

IGP Yohunu says the Ghana Police Service is committed to safeguarding every stakeholder in the by-election, including electoral officers, voters, political parties, and journalists.

Ghana’s two main political parties, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) are expected to contest in the by-election.
