Ghana’s Health Ministry has condemned an attack on medical staff at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital also known as Ridge. A viral video has shown relatives of an accident victim fighting the hospital’s emergency department workers over what they perceived to be delays in providing care.
According to the Ministry in a statement, such attacks on health workers pose danger to both patients and healthcare professionals.
The Ministry said such attacks also compromise the delivery of essential services.
In the statement dated August 18, 2025 and signed by its Deputy Director and spokesperson, Tony Goodman, the Ministry vowed to reinforce security at the hospital and initiate an investigation into the matter.
The Greater Accra Regional Hospital says its emergency unit is one Ghana’s busiest. It says its staff were actively attending to other critical cases when upset relatives forced their way into the triage area, disrupting services and threatening the safety of clinicians.
The confrontation escalated into verbal aggression and resulted in the physical assault of a nurse, prompting hospital authorities to involve the Ghana Police Service to restore order.
