GHANA: GNFS Contains Major Fire at Accra Timber Market

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully contained a major fire that erupted at the Accra Timber Market near Ayalolo School in the early hours of Saturday, September 13, 2025.

The GNFS received the emergency call at 1:17 a.m. and dispatched the first team of firefighters, who arrived on the scene just four minutes later at 1:21 a.m. A total of seven fire engines from stations across the capital—including Accra City, Ministries, Circle, and Legon—were mobilized to combat the blaze. They were supported by one GNFS water tanker and two additional tankers from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and Ablekuma Municipal Assembly.

The intense fire, which had engulfed several shops containing wooden planks and hardware materials, was brought under control through a coordinated effort. The fire was confined at 6:26 a.m. and fully extinguished by 11:44 a.m.

Two firefighters were injured during the response; one suffered an electric shock, and the other sustained burns to his left arm. Both were treated and have since been discharged.

Thanks to the swift action of the fire crews, adjoining structures, including the nearby Ayalolo cluster of schools, were successfully protected from the flames. Acting Chief Fire Officer Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sapong visited the scene to assess the situation and support the firefighting efforts.

Investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the fire.
