Several shops and wooden structures were destroyed early on Friday morning, September 19, 2025, following a fire outbreak at the Madina market in Accra, the capital of Ghana.
There was no casualties reported.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started around 1:00 a.m.
Several anxious traders and residents rushed to the scene, with many watching in despair as their investments went up in flames before the arrival of firefighters.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed that it received an emergency call at 1:36 a.m. Crews arrived at the market within two minutes, but the intensity of the blaze and the lack of nearby hydrants prompted the deployment of four additional fire engines.
In a statement, the GNFS says “The fire affected wooden structures, two corn milling shops, and nine containers.”
The National Fire Service said “It was confined at 3:07 a.m., brought under control at 3:19 a.m., and completely extinguished at 4:40 a.m.”
Although property damage was significant, firefighters managed to prevent the flames from spreading to a nearby one-storey warehouse and adjoining buildings. No casualties were reported.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established, but investigations are ongoing.
Assuring the public, the GNFS reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, stressing the need for swift responses and public cooperation during emergencies.
