The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced plans to introduce biometric versions of Ghana’s International Driver’s Licence (IDL) and International Vehicle Permit (IVP) in 2026 to improve global recognition and security.
In a statement shared on the official Facebook page of DVLA Chief Executive Officer Julius Neequaye Kotey, the Authority explained that the upgrade aims to address instances where Ghanaian IDLs and IVPs have been rejected by some foreign authorities.
The new biometric documents will feature a bio-data page and adhere to International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) specifications, ensuring global compatibility and verification.
According to the DVLA, this initiative forms part of efforts to modernize the licensing system and enhance the credibility of Ghanaian travel documents for drivers and vehicles abroad.
Issuance of the new Biometric International Driver’s Licences and Vehicle Permits will commence at all DVLA offices nationwide in 2026.
