Ghana: Court-Approved Settlement Ends Legal Dispute Between Empress Gifty and Nana Agradaa

The legal battle between gospel musician Empress Gifty Oppong Adorye and evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, has officially ended following an out-of-court settlement ratified by the courts.

The two defamation cases, filed in mid-2025, were resolved after both parties agreed to terms that included a payment of GH¢100,000 to Empress Gifty. The agreement was formally adopted as a Consent Judgment on January 20, 2026, by both the Tema Land Court and the Tema Main Court.

Background to the Case

Empress Gifty initiated legal action against Evangelist Asiedua in May and June 2025, alleging that a series of statements published on social media platforms were defamatory and had caused serious harm to her personal and professional reputation.

In her original claims, the gospel musician sought GH¢40 million in damages for slander and libel. She also asked the court to impose a perpetual injunction to prevent further defamatory statements, compel the removal of the alleged offensive content from social media, and award full legal costs.

Terms of the Settlement

According to Richard Asare Baffour, legal counsel for Nana Agradaa, both cases were settled amicably without proceeding to a full trial. As part of the agreement:
• Nana Agradaa paid GH¢100,000 to cover Empress Gifty’s legal fees and related expenses
• She issued a public retraction and apology for the statements in question
• She undertook to request assistance from the National Information Technology Agency (NITA) to facilitate the removal of the disputed content from social media platforms

Mr. Baffour confirmed that all conditions outlined in the settlement have been fully complied with, including the payment and the public apology.

Case Formally Closed

With the courts adopting the settlement as Consent Judgments, Empress Gifty has withdrawn all claims connected to the lawsuits. This development brings a definitive end to the high-profile defamation dispute, which had attracted significant public attention due to the prominence of both parties.

The resolution underscores the growing use of negotiated settlements in defamation cases, particularly those arising from social media commentary, as an alternative to prolonged court proceedings.
