The Ministry of Defence in Ghana has officially announced the start of an investigation into the fatal Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter crash that occurred on Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti region. The crash tragically claimed the lives of eight individuals.
The victims of the incident were:
- Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence
- Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation
- Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
- Dr. Samuel Sarpong, NDC Vice Chairman
- Samuel Aboagye, Deputy NADMO Director-General
- Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala
- Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu
- Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah
According to a press release from the Acting Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, an Investigation Board has been formally established and has begun its work to determine the cause of the crash. The board is chaired by the National Security Coordinator and includes members from the Ghana Air Force and the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).
The United States Air Force is providing advisory and technical support to the board through visiting investigators. The Ministry noted that the board has a 30-day mandate to complete its investigation and may call on other local and international experts for assistance. The commencement of the board’s work follows the submission of a report from a preliminary investigation team that was set up on the day of the crash.
