Ghana: 50-Year-Old Remanded in Tamale Over Alleged Defilement and Forced Abortion of 14-Year-Old

A 50-year-old man has been arrested in Tamale over allegations that he sexually abused a 14-year-old primary school pupil and later arranged for her pregnancy to be terminated without her parents’ consent.

The suspect, identified as Mohammed, was picked up by the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Northern Regional Police Command following a complaint from the victim’s family.

Allegations and Court Proceedings

According to police sources, the suspect allegedly impregnated the teenager at Nyanshegu, a suburb of Tamale. He is further accused of taking the girl to a private health facility where the pregnancy was terminated without informing or obtaining consent from her parents.

He has since been arraigned before the Tamale Magistrate Court 1, presided over by His Worship Stephen Tabiri.

The court remanded him into custody on charges of defilement and causing abortion. He is expected to reappear on March 4, 2026, as investigations continue.

Family Rejects Settlement Attempts

Speaking to Channel One News, the girl’s father, Mohammed Salifu, said the family is resolute in seeking justice.

He revealed that some community chiefs and opinion leaders had visited their home to persuade them to withdraw the case and settle the matter privately. However, the family declined.

“Two chiefs and some opinion leaders in our community came to our house to plead with us to withdraw the case, but we refused and insisted that we want justice for my daughter,” he said.

Reports of Threats

Sources close to the family indicate that they, along with others connected to the case, have allegedly received threats from individuals believed to be associated with the accused.

Police have not publicly commented on the alleged threats but investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Under Ghanaian law, defilement — involving sexual activity with a minor — is a serious criminal offence, and cases involving children are typically handled with strict legal scrutiny to protect victims and ensure due process.
