Accra, Ghana – Ghanaian media personality and talent manager George Mensah Britton has called for a more structured approach to music promotion, emphasizing that record labels play a crucial role in propelling artists to global success—including winning prestigious awards like the Grammys.
Speaking on The Chat on Channel One TV, Britton expressed concern over Ghana’s continued absence from the Grammy winners’ list. He highlighted the lack of industry infrastructure, stating that while Ghanaian musicians possess immense talent, they often fall short in strategic promotion and marketing.
Using Tems’ historic win at the 67th Grammy Awards as an example, Britton pointed out how Nigerian artists thrive due to strong backing from record labels and music executives who heavily invest in their global positioning. He noted that artists like Burna Boy and Yemi Alade, despite their Grammy nominations, benefit from an industry that consistently pushes their music onto the world stage.
> “The problem is not the talent. In Nigeria, music executives invest in promotion and marketing. But in Ghana, we focus only on talent. The only time a musician is mentioned is when they are present. Meanwhile, Nigerian artists and their teams are consistently active in the U.S. and other major markets,” Britton stated.
His remarks have reignited discussions about the future of Ghanaian music on the global stage. While the road to Grammy success remains uncertain, Britton believes a shift toward structured promotion and investment could be the key to unlocking international recognition for Ghanaian artists.
