A Gen Z protest has toppled the government in Madagascar, with President Andry Rajoelina, reported to have fled the nation on a French military plane.
Reports say he fled the country hours before he was scheduled to address his citizens.
A report by French state radio RFI on Monday, October 13, 2025, said Rajoelina had been flown out of the capital, Antananarivo.
Rajoelina, who also a French citizen, was reportedly flown out of the country after a deal with President Emmanuel Macron.
RFI reported that Rajoelina may have been flown to Dubai.
Before being flown out of the country, he had been due to speak to the nation at 7pm (1600 GMT), a statement from the Presidency shared on Facebook, revealed.
Rajoelina, aged 51, first served as president from 2009 to 2014 before returning to power in 2023.
He faced mounting pressure after losing the support of a key army unit that joined thousands of youths activists known as “Gen Z Madagascar” to protest against corruption and poverty.
The “Gen Z Madagascar” protesters had turned down an invitation to meet him for dialogue and demanded his resignation.
They had protesting over shortages over electricity and water.
