Gambia Confirms Hosting Cameroonian Opposition Figure Amid Post-Election Unrest

The Gambian government has confirmed that prominent Cameroonian opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary is currently in the country under temporary humanitarian protection, following weeks of uncertainty over his whereabouts after Cameroon’s disputed presidential election.

Tchiroma, who contested the October poll against longtime incumbent President Paul Biya, reportedly sought refuge after widespread demonstrations erupted across several Cameroonian cities when early tallies indicated Biya was heading for yet another term in office. The 92-year-old president, who has ruled since 1982, was later declared winner with 53.66% of the vote, while Tchiroma secured 35.19%.

According to United Nations sources cited by Reuters, at least 48 civilians were killed during clashes between security forces and demonstrators during the post-election unrest. Tchiroma had remained out of public view for weeks before The Gambia disclosed his presence on Sunday.

Gambia Cites African Solidarity

In a statement released by its Ministry of Information, The Gambia said it agreed to host Tchiroma “purely on humanitarian grounds” to guarantee his personal safety at a time of heightened tension in Cameroon. The statement emphasized that Banjul’s gesture aligns with the country’s longstanding commitment to African cooperation and mutual support.

The Gambian government added that it is consulting with regional partners, including Nigeria and other members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), to encourage a peaceful resolution to Cameroon’s post-election crisis. It also reiterated that its territory will not be used for activities aimed at destabilizing any African Union member state.

Domestic Reactions in Banjul

Tchiroma’s discreet arrival drew mixed reactions within The Gambia. The main opposition party, the United Democratic Party (UDP), criticized the government for not providing earlier public information about his presence but nonetheless welcomed the humanitarian initiative. The UDP said it supports offering safe shelter to individuals facing risk during political crises elsewhere on the continent.

The Gambian government has not disclosed how long Tchiroma is expected to remain in the country, noting that his stay will depend on ongoing diplomatic efforts and developments in Cameroon.
