Four Soldiers Killed as Nigerian Forces Foil Major Insurgent Assault in Borno State

Four Nigerian soldiers were killed and five others wounded as troops repelled a coordinated attack by Islamist insurgents in Ngamdu, northeastern Borno State, the military said on Friday.

The assault, launched late Thursday, involved rocket-propelled grenades, armed drones, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) targeting military personnel and vehicles, according to a military spokesperson. Reinforcements from the 29 Task Force Brigade were deployed to repel the attackers, who also damaged several Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles and gun trucks.

The military reported that at least 15 insurgents were killed during the clash. The attackers also planted multiple IEDs along the Ngamdu–Damaturu main supply route, briefly halting movement. Military engineers later cleared three explosive-laden sites, restoring safe passage for both military and civilian vehicles.

Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have intensified assaults on military positions across Borno this year, the epicenter of a conflict that has killed tens of thousands and displaced around 2 million people over more than a decade.

Conflict data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) indicates that insurgents have launched 333 attacks in northeast Nigeria so far this year, compared to 375 in all of 2024.

The Nigerian military said it has stepped up counterinsurgency operations across Borno in recent months as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle militant networks in the region.
