Former Ghana’s Finance Minister Undergoes Cancer Surgery

A former Finance Minister of Ghana who was recently placed on Interpol’s wanted list for corruption, Ken Ofori-Atta, has successfully undergone cancer surgery in the United States of the (USA), his wife has disclosed.

 

A statement issued by his wife, Prof. Mrs. Angela Ofori-Atta, on Monday, June 16, 2025, says he underwent the cancer surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

 

According to her, the surgery – a robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy – took place on Friday, June 13, and last over four hours.

 

She added that “The doctors are pleased with how the procedure went and will now place him on a postoperative regime.”

 

She said the period leading up to the operation was particularly difficult, making reference to the timing of a public alert issued by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) concerning her husband.

 

Prof. Ofori-Atta says “Kenneth has always been resilient. But this has been very difficult; with the OSP choosing the period just before his surgery to declare a red alert on him.”

 

But she noted that Mr. Ofori-Atta is “bearing up well” and remains focused on regaining his health, saying “Our family is truly grateful for the support and prayers of many people and pastors.”

Investigation

 

Interpol had recently listed Mr. Ofori-Atta, who is under investigation for his alleged involvement in several high-profile corruption cases, as “wanted” on its official website.

 

The charged leveled against Mr. Ofori-Atta on Interpol’s website is “using public office for profit.”

 

Mr. Ofori-Atta was listed on the Interpol red notice on June 5, 2025, after the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) of Ghana re-declared him as wanted following his failure to appear before the OSP for questioning on June 2.

 

As earlier reported, Ghana’s Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, at a press conference on June 2, noted that steps had been taken to place Mr. Ofori-Atta on an Interpol Red Notice with extradition proceedings underway to return him to Ghana.

 

What is the issue?

 

Mr. Ofori-Atta, who served as Finance Minister under erstwhile President Nana Akufo-Addo’s government,

is being investigated for his alleged involvement in several high-profile cases, including:

 

1. Petroleum and Minerals Revenue Assurance: Contractual arrangements between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

2. Electricity Company Contract Termination: The termination of a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana and Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC).

3. National Cathedral Project: Procurement procedures and financial transactions related to the construction of the National Cathedral.

4. Ambulance Procurement: A Ministry of Health contract with Service Ghana Auto Group Limited for the purchase and maintenance of 307 ambulances.

5. GRA Tax P-Fund Management: The handling and disbursement of funds from the GRA’s Tax P-Fund Account.
