A violent confrontation over a N100 transport levy has resulted in the death of a commercial motorcyclist in the Ijoko area of Ogun State. The incident, involving a member of a transport union tax collection group (popularly known as agberos), has triggered large-scale protests and disrupted transportation across several communities.
The Fatal Altercation
The incident occurred on Tuesday night following a disagreement between levy collectors and the deceased motorcyclist. According to witnesses, what began as a minor argument over the payment of a N100 ticket quickly escalated into a violent clash.
Eyewitnesses reported that during the scuffle, a levy collector produced a knife and stabbed the motorcyclist. A fellow rider, identified as Rasheed, disclosed that two people were actually stabbed during the altercation; while one survived, the other—a motorcyclist originally from Nasarawa—succumbed to his injuries.
Protests and Transportation Paralysis
Following the news of the killing, commercial motorcyclists across Lambe, Agbado, and Akute staged coordinated protests on Wednesday to express their anger. The demonstrations led to:
- Confrontations: Riders were seen actively confronting levy collectors in various affected areas.
- Service Disruptions: Many motorcyclists withdrew their services in solidarity, leaving a significant shortage of commercial transport.
- Commuter Hardship: Hundreds of commuters were forced to trek long distances to reach their destinations as transport activities remained paralyzed.
Witness Accounts
“They were fighting over a N100 ticket. It started as a small argument before it escalated,” Rasheed told reporters. “His colleagues are the ones now confronting agberos in Lambe, Ijoko and parts of Akute.”
Another rider in Akute, Ganiyu, confirmed the tension, stating, “The agbero suddenly brought out a knife and stabbed him. Some riders have refused to work since then.”
Police Response and Clarification
A senior police officer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident on Thursday. While initial reports suggested the stabbing occurred in Akute, authorities clarified that the scene of the crime was actually in Ijoko, within the Agbado-Sango axis.
The police confirmed that several individuals were arrested during subsequent confrontations between riders and union members. Security presence has been increased in the affected areas to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
