Rebel fighters from the Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF) have seized control of several districts in Ethiopia’s Amhara region after inflicting what eyewitnesses describe as heavy casualties on federal troops during multiple attacks over the weekend.
The renewed clashes reportedly followed the alleged killing and mutilation of a captured female rebel, identified as Balem Wassie, by government soldiers. According to information obtained by APA, Wassie, a member of the Fano commando unit operating in the Gojjam area, was recently captured by federal forces.

In a statement, the AFNF accused government troops of killing Wassie, desecrating her body, and leaving it on a public road — an act that has sparked widespread outrage on social media.
The Fano group said the attacks launched in the Gojjam and Wollo areas were in retaliation, resulting in the capture of several towns and at least six districts in the North Wollo Zone. Residents confirmed that government troops attempting to advance toward Muja and Kulmesk through Tekulesh near Raya Kobo suffered significant losses.
Eyewitnesses, speaking anonymously, also reported that the towns of Lalibela and Beklo Manekiya in North Wollo are now under Fano control.

In a separate development, Fano forces recently handed over 16 wounded government soldiers to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), captured during earlier operations in North Wollo.
The Amhara region has seen repeated allegations of serious human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings, attributed to the Ethiopian Defense Forces over the past two years, deepening tensions between federal troops and regional militias.
