Mutharika, aged 85, was re-elected with 56.8 percent of votes cast in the September 16 elections.

Incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera polled 33 percent of votes cast, according to Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

Chakwera, aged 70, added that “It was clear that my rival Peter Mutharika has an insurmountable lead over me.”
According to him, “In the days that remain, I want you to know that I am committed to a peaceful transfer of power.”
