A woman has been arrested in Brazil on suspicion of poisoning Easter eggs and sending them to her ex-boyfriend’s new family, allegedly causing the death of a seven-year-old boy.

Jordélia Pereira Barbosa, 35, is accused of buying, spiking and sending the chocolate to her former partner’s new girlfriend, with officials alleging that she was motivated by ‘revenge and jealousy’.

The eggs were delivered on Wednesday to her ex’s new partner, named in Brazilian media as Mirian Lira, who then shared them with her kids.

They were bought to her home by a motorcycle courier, reportedly accompanied with a note which read: ‘With love, to Mirian Lira. Happy Easter.’

Lira’s young son, Luis Fernando Rocha Silva reportedly fell ill almost instantly and his mother rushed him to Imperatriz City Hospital where he died just hours later in the early hours of Thursday.

His 32-year-old mother remains in hospital in a critical condition along with her daughter, Evelyn Fernanda, who is 13, with both said to be intubated and in serious condition.
