Erik ten Hag in Advanced Talks to Join Bayer Leverkusen Ahead of 2025/26 Season

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is reportedly on the verge of returning to management, with Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen emerging as his likely next destination ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Thursday, May 22, 2025, that ten Hag has made significant progress in negotiations with Leverkusen. The German club is actively seeking a replacement for Xabi Alonso, who is set to take over as Real Madrid head coach in June 2025.

“Bayer Leverkusen made progress in talks with Erik ten Hag to become their new head coach. Ten Hag has given his total availability after direct contact taking place earlier this week,” Romano stated on social media.

Ten Hag has been out of management since his dismissal from Manchester United early in the 2024/25 campaign. Despite facing criticism from sections of the United fanbase, his tenure at Old Trafford included notable successes — winning both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.

Should the move to Leverkusen materialise, it would mark ten Hag’s return to top-tier European football, with a fresh opportunity to rebuild his managerial reputation in Germany’s top flight.
