Eminem made a poignant return to the stage on December 7, performing at the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix just five days after the passing of his mother, Debbie Nelson. The rapper, known for his intense and often provocative lyrics, made a notable gesture during his set, opting to skip a lyric from his 2002 hit “Without Me” that contains a harsh dig at his late mother.

Instead, Eminem allowed the crowd to fill in the lyric, a move he has made in the past when performing the song. The omitted line, “I just settled all my lawsuits/F— you Debbie,” was a reference to the $10 million defamation lawsuit Nelson filed against her son in 1999.

Eminem and his mother had a complicated relationship, with the rapper often addressing their troubled past through his music. In “Cleanin’ Out My Closet,” he criticized Nelson, accusing her of neglect and abuse. However, in later years, Eminem appeared to make amends with his mother through song, suggesting a deeper complexity to their relationship.

Nelson passed away on December 2 at the age of 69 due to complications related to lung cancer. Her death marks a significant loss for Eminem, and his emotional return to the stage serves as a testament to the enduring impact of their relationship on his life and music.
