El Othmani Slams Moroccan Government Over Broken Promises and Mishandling of Gen Z Protests

Former Moroccan Head of Government, Saad Eddine El Othmani, has delivered a sharp critique of the current administration, accusing it of failing to meet citizens’ expectations amid widespread protests led by Gen Z youth.

Speaking at the opening session of the Moroccan Liberal Party conference, El Othmani described Morocco’s current phase as “difficult and delicate socially, politically, and nationally,” citing challenges related to human rights, citizen dignity, and social justice.

He blamed the government’s poor communication and political disengagement for worsening public frustration. “It’s not the only problem, but it sits at the top of the issues during the current government’s term,” he said.

Youth Protests Reflect National Frustration

El Othmani said the ongoing Gen Z protests reflect the broader grievances of Moroccan society. “Their demands — for better healthcare, education, jobs, and the fight against corruption — are shared by all Moroccans,” he noted.

He commended the youth for exercising their right to protest, calling the demonstrations “a political message and an affirmation of the principles of freedom of assembly and expression, which we must preserve.”

However, he cautioned against acts of vandalism or violence, urging protesters to remain peaceful and vigilant. “While these protests began with sincere intentions, other circles have since entered, seeking to exploit the situation,” he warned.

Corruption and Accountability

El Othmani also accused the current administration of abandoning Morocco’s national anti-corruption strategy. “We have a corruption problem in this country — that much is clear,” he said, pointing out that 32 sitting parliamentarians are currently facing corruption charges, many from ruling coalition parties.

He recalled that his government had established the first institutions dedicated to implementing the national anti-corruption plan initiated under the Benkirane administration. “Instead of evaluating or strengthening the strategy, the current government froze it. The national committee responsible for its implementation hasn’t met even once,” he lamented.

Unmet Promises on Jobs

Turning to the economy, El Othmani criticized the government for failing to deliver on its job creation pledges. “Where are the one million jobs that were promised? Even official reports show fewer than 200,000,” he said, citing Planning Commission data.

He concluded that the administration had failed to meet the nation’s expectations due to “the erosion of politics and efforts to sideline it,” arguing that Morocco’s growing social and political tensions — especially among its youth — are a direct result of this failure.

“The youth on the streets today are expressing what millions of Moroccans feel,” El Othmani said. “Their voices deserve to be heard — not ignored.”
