West African Presidets have unanimously endorsed the resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) making Ghanaian President, John Dramani Mahama the only West African candidate candidacy for the 2027 Chairperson role of the African Union (AU).
In 2027, the chairmanship of the African Union will rotate to West Africa.
The ECOWAS Ministers first unanimously endorsed Mahama in Abuja.
On Sunday, December 14, 2025, during its 68th extraordinary summit in Abuja, the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government adopted the declaration.

Earlier on Friday, December 12, 2025, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, extended Ghana’s appreciation to the ECOWAS Ministers for endorsing President Mahama.
Ablakwa wrote in a Facebook post: “Ghana is exceedingly grateful to ECOWAS for the confidence and support for our beloved visionary and Pan-African President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama”.
President Mahama was among the West African leaders who converged on Abuja on Sunday to attend the ECOWAS summit. Also in attendance was Chairperson of the ECOWAS Commission and President of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio.
