D’Tigress of Nigeria has set a new record for Africa in Basketball at the Olympic Games 2024 currently taking place in Paris.

 

Following an impressive victory over Canada in the final match of the group stages in basketball at the Olympic Games 2024, D’Tigress of Nigeria who secured a swift qualification to the quarter-finals of the competition became the first African country in the history of the Olympics to secure a qualification to the knockout stage of the basketball competition.

 

For the first time in the history of the Olympics for both the male and female teams, an African country secured an automatic qualification to the knockout stage of a basketball competition.

 

The Afrobasket leaders secured a 79-70 victory against Canada in their final group match, overcoming initial doubts about their qualification prospects given Canada’s 7th-place ranking.

 

Rena Wakama’s team started strong, establishing a 10-point lead at one stage but later allowed Canada to catch up. By the end of the first quarter, the teams were tied at 18-18.

 

D’Tigress went into halftime still within reach, trailing by just four points (41-37). The African champions made a strong comeback in the third quarter, taking a 55-46 lead. Ultimately, Nigeria emerged victorious with a 79-70 win.
