Borussia Dortmund has successfully completed the permanent signing of England youth international Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea on a five-year contract. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder’s transfer, which could be worth up to £24 million, comes after a successful loan spell at the German club during the latter half of last season. Chukwuemeka originally joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in a £20 million deal back in 2022, and he went on to make 32 appearances for the Blues.
In a related move, Chelsea’s defender Aaron Anselmino has also finalized a season-long loan to Dortmund and has traveled to Germany to complete the agreement. These two transfers contribute to Chelsea’s summer income from player sales, which has now exceeded £270 million, nearly offsetting the £277 million spent on new arrivals.
This financial balancing is crucial for Chelsea’s ability to register new players for the upcoming Champions League season, following a recent warning from UEFA. The governing body had previously fined the club £26.7 million for a breach of its financial rules and for having a squad cost ratio that exceeded 80% of its income. To comply with UEFA’s regulations, the Blues must achieve a positive transfer balance before the transfer window closes.
With the transfer deadline approaching on Monday, several other players are reportedly on the move. Forwards Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, and Tyrique George, as well as winger Raheem Sterling and defender Ben Chilwell, are among those linked with a potential departure from Stamford Bridge. On the incoming side, Chelsea is also exploring the possibility of bringing in Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho and RB Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons.
