MANCHESTER, UK — A medical tribunal has heard that Dr. Suhail Anjum, a 44-year-old anaesthetist, left a patient on an operating table under anaesthetic to have sex with a nurse in another room. The incident, which occurred in September 2023 at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester, came to light during a fitness-to-practice hearing.
The tribunal was told that Dr. Anjum requested a “comfort break,” asking a colleague to monitor the male patient. Instead, he went to another operating theatre where he was discovered in a “compromising position” with a woman referred to as Nurse C by a “shocked” colleague. Dr. Anjum, who was absent for approximately eight minutes, returned and completed the procedure without any harm coming to the patient.
Representing the General Medical Council (GMC), Andrew Molloy confirmed that the nurse who found the pair reported the matter to her line manager. In his evidence to the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service, Dr. Anjum admitted to the sexual activity, calling his behaviour “shameful” and a “one-off error of judgment.” He attributed his actions to a “stressful time” he was experiencing with his family.
Dr. Anjum, who had been living in Pakistan, is now seeking to resume his career in the UK. He has apologised for his conduct, telling the tribunal, “I offer my sincere apologies to everyone involved and I want the opportunity to put this right.” The hearing is scheduled to continue.
