Death Toll In Air India Plane Crash Increases To 270

At least 270 bodies have been recovered by doctors from the site of Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. 

 

Aside the recoveries of the bodies, vigils honoring the dead have been held across India and the United Kingdom (UK).

 

The Air India flight AI171 carrying 242 passengers and 12 crew members crashed on Thursday, 30 seconds after taking off from the Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The plane, bound for Gatwick Airport in London, crashed into a residential building being used by medical students.

 

Air India CEO, Campbell Wilson, said 241 out of 242 passengers were killed in the crash. The 12 crew members were also killed.

 

The rest of the persons killed were those on the ground when the plane crashed into the student hostel.

 

India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is leading the inquiry into the cause of the crash, with assistance from investigative teams from the UK and US.

 

On Friday, a black box was found at the crash site.

 

India’s Aviation Minister, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, says the discovery of the black box would “significantly aid the inquiry” into the disaster.

 

On Friday, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, spent close to 20 touring the site of the plane crash. The Prime Minister also took time to visit some of those injured in the disaster, including the sole crash survivor Vishwash Kumar Ramesh.

 

Mr. Modi says “The entire nation is praying for their (those injured) speedy recovery.”
