Davido Opens Up About His Father’s $200K Intervention: A Career-Saving Move

In a recent interview with BET, Nigerian music sensation Davido shared a pivotal moment in his career that could have gone a different way if not for his father’s intervention. Davido revealed that his father, Dr. Adedeji Adeleke, paid $200,000 to terminate a record contract when he was just 17 years old. This decision, Davido believes, changed the trajectory of his music career.

The contract in question was offered to Davido after his hit single “Dami Duro” gained massive popularity. However, his father wasn’t impressed with the deal and decided to refund the full amount, freeing Davido from the commitment. According to Davido, his father didn’t want him to be tied down to anyone, and he was grateful for the decision. “My Dad found out someone gave me $200K for a contract, he called them, gave them back their money and cancelled the contract,” Davido narrated.

A Blessing in Disguise?

Davido confessed that he was initially disappointed with his father’s decision, feeling like he was missing out on a lucrative opportunity. “He didn’t want me to owe anybody but I was feeling like you’re a whole billionaire and you don’t want to give me money, so I had to go find my way,” Davido recounted. However, he now believes that his father’s intervention was a blessing in disguise. “Thank God he did (cancel the contract) because I would have just been getting off the contract like two years ago,” he said.

Touring the World

The conversation wasn’t all about the past, though. Davido also discussed his upcoming “5 Alive” tour, which promises to be an exciting experience for fans worldwide. The tour will feature 13 dates, including a landmark concert at the 60,000-capacity Tottenham Hotspur stadium in the United Kingdom, where he’ll share the stage with American hip-hop icon 50 Cent and multi-Grammy-winning singer Mary J. Blige.
