The high-profile custody battle between Afrobeats superstar Davido and his former partner, Sophia Momodu, has come to an abrupt end. Following reports of a heated courtroom outburst at the High Court in Yaba, Davido has officially announced his decision to drop the case, citing “wicked” tactics used by the opposing legal team.
Clarification on “Full Custody” vs. “Joint Custody”
In his first public statement following the hearing, Davido clarified the nature of his legal pursuit. He refuted claims that he was attempting to take the child away from her mother entirely.
“I never asked for full custody. I asked for joint custody,” the singer stated. He emphasized that the legal battle was about his right to be an active part of his daughter Imade’s life, rather than an attempt to sideline Momodu.
The Turning Point: Mention of His Deceased Son
Davido explained that his loss of composure in the courtroom was a direct response to a specific line of questioning from Sophia Momodu’s lawyer. According to the singer, the lawyer invoked the memory of his late son, Ifeanyi, as a strategic move during cross-examination.
“I’ve decided to drop the case because… she brought out her last card! MY DECEASED SON! THAT’S A NO-NO! Lowest blow!” Davido revealed. He described the tactic as “wicked” and expressed disbelief that the lawyer was “smiling and smirking” while referencing the tragedy he and his wife, Chioma, endured.
Disgrace in the Courtroom
Despite the emotional distress, Davido asserted that he held his own during the proceedings, claiming he “beat” the lawyer in terms of legal knowledge and presentation before the personal attack occurred.
“I disgraced you in the courtroom. I was teaching you your work; you couldn’t even take it,” he posted on Instagram, addressing the lawyer directly. “You’re the worst lawyer ever.”
Dropping the Case: “My Daughter Will Know I Fought”
Explaining his decision to walk away from the litigation, Davido noted that he believes his efforts have already sent the necessary message to his daughter.
- No Winner: “Nobody won, nobody lost, but Imade… so I don’t know why some people are celebrating. There’s nothing to celebrate.”
- The Legacy: “My daughter will grow up knowing I fought for her. Let’s move on. One love!”
Moving Forward
With the case dropped, the singer appears focused on moving past the public drama. However, the incident has highlighted the “unforgiving” nature of high-stakes family law in Nigeria, particularly regarding the use of personal tragedies in cross-examination.
As of now, Sophia Momodu’s legal team has not responded to Davido’s specific allegations regarding the “lowest blow” or his claims of “disgracing” them in court.
