Couple’s Sex Act Behind the Wheel at 90mph Leads to Criminal Charges After Near-Crash on German Autobahn

German police say a reckless driver could face years behind bars after allegedly engaging in sexual intercourse while driving his car at roughly 90 miles per hour on the Autobahn — nearly causing a serious multi-vehicle accident.

The incident took place on the A1 motorway in western Germany on Monday, as the Ford vehicle was travelling toward Dortmund. According to German media reports, the car repeatedly swerved across lanes and at one point drifted so sharply to the right that it forced a nearby truck driver to swerve onto the hard shoulder to avoid a collision.

A witness travelling behind the vehicle called police after seeing the 37-year-old male driver and his 33-year-old female passenger visibly involved in sexual activity.

Police later intercepted the pair at a petrol station outside Münster, where they were both detained. The male driver has since been formally charged with “dangerous interference with road traffic” under Section 315b of Germany’s criminal code — a serious offence that carries a penalty of up to five years in prison or a substantial fine.

Although parts of Germany’s Autobahn network are known internationally for having no fixed speed limits, large sections do have restrictions and all motorists must maintain proper vehicle control. Safety officials say that distraction behind the wheel — including texting, intoxication, or sexual acts — remains one of the highest causes of fatal crashes in the country.

Local prosecutors say more charges could follow depending on the outcome of witness statements and dashcam footage from nearby vehicles on the road at the time.
