Madagascar’s coup leader, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, who seized power earlier this month, has appointed businessman and consultant Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo as the country’s new prime minister.
Randrianirina, sworn in as president on Friday following youth-led protests that ousted his predecessor, said his decision was based on Rajaonarivelo’s “experience and connections with international organizations that work with us.”

Former president Andry Rajoelina, impeached by lawmakers after fleeing abroad last weekend, has denounced the military takeover and insists he remains the legitimate leader.
