Guinea-Bissau’s President, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, has reportedly been arrested, with a group of soldiers saying they have seized power.

President Embaló was arrested on Wednesday afternoon, November 26, 2025.

His arrest comes days after a presidential election in which the main opposition was disqualified.

Reports say gunfire was heard in the capital, Bissau.

President Embaló and his challenger Fernando Dias both claimed victory, with Dias contesting the results.

The Electoral Commission of Guinea-Bissau said the final results will be announced by Thursday.

But a group of soldiers have come out to say they have seized control of the country.

A group of military officers appeared on state TV on Wednesday to announce that they had suspended the electoral process and would be in charge until further notice.

Guinea-Bissau on Sunday held its presidential election, in which the main opposition candidate had been disqualified from running.
