City Swoop for Brazilian Wonderkid Reis in €40m January Deal

Manchester City are reportedly on the verge of signing Palmeiras’ highly-rated 18-year-old centre-back, Vitor Reis, in a €40 million deal, according to reports. The move marks Pep Guardiola’s first signing of the January 2025 transfer window as City look to bolster their squad after a difficult first half of the season.

Following initial speculation, reports have emerged that City have agreed personal terms with Reis and his representatives. Negotiations with Palmeiras are ongoing, with the Premier League champions eager to finalize the transfer and fend off interest from other clubs. Reis is considered a rising star in Brazilian football and is expected to be a valuable addition to Guardiola’s squad.

City’s pursuit of Reis comes as they currently sit sixth in the Premier League, having won only 10 of their first 20 matches. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported that Reis is a primary target for the club, with significant progress already made in discussions with Palmeiras. The proposed €40 million fee comes after previous offers from other clubs were rejected.

With the Champions League campaign intensifying, Guardiola has spoken about the need to strengthen his squad. City have faced challenges with injuries, defensive vulnerabilities, and inconsistent attacking form. The signing of Reis is seen as a key step in addressing these issues.

City’s strong financial position, bolstered by record profits, provides them with flexibility in the transfer market. While Guardiola prefers a smaller squad, some younger players may be loaned out for more playing time. The club is not in a rush to sell players, but strategic planning is underway to shape the team’s future. The contract situation of Kevin De Bruyne, who has attracted interest from MLS and Saudi Arabian clubs, also remains a priority. The January transfer window is set to be crucial for City as they aim to revitalize their domestic and European campaigns.
