On July 28, 2025, Grammy-winning American singer Ciara announced on Instagram that she has been granted citizenship by the Republic of Benin. The ceremony took place on July 26, coinciding with the UN’s International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent.
Ciara shared that she traced her ancestry to Benin and was honored to be the first recipient of citizenship under the country’s new nationality initiative. She was welcomed by President Patrice Talon and senior government officials during the event.
In a video from her visit, Ciara proudly declared, “Je suis béninoise.” She expressed gratitude for the warm reception, stating, “Thank you Benin for opening your arms and your heart to me. See you soon.”
