China Rejects Somaliland Recognition, Reiterates Backing for Somalia’s Territorial Unity

China has restated its firm opposition to any move that undermines Somalia’s sovereignty, warning against international recognition of Somaliland and what it described as external interference in Somalia’s internal affairs.

Speaking at a regular press briefing on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said China “resolutely opposes any attempt to split Somalia’s territory,” reaffirming Beijing’s support for the country’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. He added that no state should promote or assist separatist movements in another country for its own interests, and urged authorities in Somaliland to halt what he called separatist activities and cooperation with outside actors.

Somaliland, located in northern Somalia, declared independence in 1991 following the collapse of Somalia’s central government. Despite maintaining its own government, security forces, and electoral processes for more than three decades, it has not been formally recognized as a sovereign state by the international community. Somalia’s federal government continues to regard Somaliland as an integral part of its territory.

China’s comments came amid heightened diplomatic debate after reports that Israel had announced a decision to formally recognize the self-declared Republic of Somaliland and pursue cooperation in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, technology, and trade. Such a move, if implemented, would mark a significant shift in regional and international engagement with Somaliland and has drawn criticism from countries that emphasize Somalia’s territorial integrity.

Beijing has long supported Somalia’s federal government and aligns with the broader international position that favors Somalia’s unity while encouraging dialogue to resolve internal political disputes peacefully.
