Chelsea Football Club have halted their pursuit of AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, initially targeted as a potential replacement for Robert Sanchez ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup. The Blues valued the French international at €10m (£8.46m) to €15m (£12.7m), but AC Milan rejected the proposed fee, prompting Chelsea to withdraw.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the deal’s collapse on social media, stating, “Mike Maignan deal now OFF between Chelsea and AC Milan. Chelsea not willing to meet Milan price, deal not proceeding in time for Club World Cup as #CFC won’t pay ‘CWC tax.’”
Despite having five goalkeepers—Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic, Mike Penders, and Kepa Arrizabalaga—Chelsea are unlikely to sign a new goalkeeper this summer following the failed negotiations. However, there remains a possibility of revisiting the deal in July 2025 before the Club World Cup concludes.
