The President of Chad, Mahamat Idriss Derby, has instructed his government to suspend the issuance of visas to citizens of the United States of America in retaliation to President Donald Trump’s travel ban on Chad.

In a Facebook post following the signing of an executive order by President Trump that barred by citizens of Chad and 11 other countries to the United States, the Chadian President says “I instructed the government to act in accordance with the principles of reciprocity and suspend the issuance of visas to citizens of the United States of America.”

He added “Chad has no planes to offer, no billions of dollars to give but Chad has his dignity and pride.”

Travel Ban

Mr. Trump on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, signed an executive order banning the citizens of 12 countries from traveling to America.

Trump says the ban was necessary to protect America against “foreign terrorists” and other security threats.

The affected countries are Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

The entry of citizens from seven other countries: Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela, will be partially restricted.

In a video posted on X, Trump says: “We will not allow people to enter our country who wish to do us harm.”

Announcing the ban, Trump says “We don’t want them”.

There are some exceptions to the ban, including athletes traveling for major sporting events, some Afghan citizens and dual nationals with citizenship in unaffected countries.

The travel ban will come into effect on June 9, 2025. It is in fulfillment of a promise Trump made during his 2024 election campaign.

But Chad has taken a retaliatory move rather going into a plea or dialogue arrangement with America.
