The government of Chad has launched a new food sale subsidy initiative aimed at helping the country’s poor people.
Through Chad’s National Food Security Office (ONASA), the programme was launched on August 7, 2025.
It will see a subsidized sale of foodstuffs in the 9th district of N’Djamena.
According to the Chadian government, the programme involves the distribution of over 120 tonnes of staple food products, including 3,000 bags of rice, 200 bags of maize, 150 bags of sorghum, 200 bags of sugar, and 500 liters of oil, offered at subsidized prices.
Prices are set at 10,000 CFA francs for a 100kg bag
of sorghum, 5,000 CFA francs for 50kg of maize, 15,000 CFA francs for 50kg of sugar, and 15,000 CFA francs for a 20-liter container of oil.
In total, 3,000 tonnes of food supplies have been mobilized for similar subsidized sales across all 10 districts of the capital during this lean season.
This support enables ONASA to fulfill its role as a key government instrument in responding to food and nutrition crises.
“These are not donations but subsidized sales exclusively intended for vulnerable individuals, meaning those lacking economic and social resources,” explained Djimtogbaye Appolin, Mayor of the 9th district.
He warned against any attempts of resale: “It is unacceptable for merchants to purchase these supplies and resell them at higher prices.
If such cases are detected, the offenders will be reprimanded. These products are meant strictly for family consumption,” he said.
