Cameroon’s Paul Biya Secures Eighth Term in Office, Extending Four-Decade Rule

Cameroon’s long-serving leader, President Paul Biya, has been re-elected for an eighth term, according to official results released on Monday by the country’s Constitutional Council.

“Hereby proclaimed President-elect: the candidate Biya Paul,” announced Clement Atangana, president of the Constitutional Council, confirming the 92-year-old’s continued hold on power.

Biya, who first assumed office in 1982, has now ruled Cameroon for more than four decades, making him one of the world’s longest-serving heads of state. He abolished presidential term limits in 2008, enabling his repeated re-elections, often by wide margins.

His main challenger in this year’s election was Issa Tchiroma Bakary, a former government spokesperson and employment minister in his late 70s. Bakary broke away from Biya’s administration earlier this year to run as an opposition candidate, rallying large crowds and winning support from a coalition of opposition parties and civic groups.

Biya’s latest victory extends his presidency, potentially keeping him in power until he is nearly 100 years old, amid growing domestic and international calls for political transition in the Central African nation.
