The main opposition leader of Cameroon, Maurice Kamto, has complained about Cameroonian police surrounding his home for the past two days. Police have also blocked access to his party headquarters.

According to Kamto, since he returned from France, his home in the city of Douala has been surrounded by police.

On Sunday, June 8, 2025, Mr. Kamto says police blocked him from leaving his home for a meeting with members of his Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM).

He was forced to call off the meeting on Monday because of the strong police presence around his home.

Aged 71, Mr. Kamto, a law professor is seeking to run for the presidency in Cameroon’s upcoming presidential election scheduled for October this year.

Mr. Kamto will be contesting against incumbent 92-years-old Paul Biya, Africa’s second-longest serving leader who is seeking his eighth term of office.

President Biya has been in power for 42 years and despite his advanced age, he is insisting seeking another term of office.

On Sunday, videos shared online showed Mr. Kamto telling his supporters “as I speak, I am still sequestered”.

The opposition leader told his chanting supporters “Go home in calm and dignity.”

Access to the CRM party headquarters were also restricted by police and gendarme. The security forces told journalists that the meeting was not authorized.

Mr. Kamto dismissed the security forces claim that the meeting was not authorized, revealing that local authorities and law enforcement officials were briefed that he was coming to Douala for a meeting.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kamto’s eligibility to contest in the October’s election remais in doubt. This is because per the electoral laws of Cameroon, any political party must already have elected representatives in place if its leader wants to contest presidential election.

In the 2018 election of Cameroon, Mr. Kamto’s CRM party had just one senator.

Going into the 2025 election, CRM has no elected officials, raising questions about Mr. Kamto’s eligibility.
